Tommy Bahama finishes second at the Key West APBA-Offshore World Championship |
Offshore race teams returned to Key West after the hurricane Michelle evacuation two weeks earlier to complete racing for the World Championship. After a 3rd place finish in race #1, TOMMY BAHAMA was ready to go for the win. Total points scored in the two races determine the overall World Champion, and at least four teams had a shot at the overall win depending on finishing order and time differentials. Conditions were near perfect under sunny skies, warm temperatures, and moderate seas. The feature race with the biggest and fastest Super Cat boats saw Drambuie, Spirit of Puerto Rico, and TOMMY BAHAMA, the three favorites, line up side by side for the start. On the 5th lap at the roughest part of the course the Nemschoffs passed Puerto Rico going into turn #2 and Puerto Rico lost control, spun out, and rolled over. From that point on it was a two boat match race for the World title with TOMMY BAHAMA staying close to Drambuie, the Nation Champion, but never leading. Paul Nemschoff, driver, said, “As we burned off fuel we were more closely matched and we pushed very hard. Hugh Fuller and Johnny Tomlinson are considered the best right now and I wanted to race them deck to deck, but they had a little too much today and our set up was not perfect. We did what we could but it was not our day.”
This was the final event of the season for the APBA-Offshore Pro Series. APBA-Offshore is the premier Offshore sanctioning organization in the US, with more than 25 races and 84 hours of original TV programming aired on Fox-Speedvision
