TOMMY BAHAMA SHINES IN THE FLORIDA SUN
The Tommy Bahama Offshore Super Cat finished 6th after leading early in the Daytona International Speedway / APBA-Offshore Grand Prix today. Run on a 5.5 mile course along famed Daytona Beach, weather conditions were perfect for spectators lining the beach, but 5 - 7 ft. waves made racing tricky and spectacular. Ex racer and current TV personality, Bruce Penhall of 'CHIPS' fame, said "This was the best offshore race I've ever seen." Driver Paul Nemschoff added, "It was as rough as any race I've been in and the waves took their toll. We are fortunate to have come out unscathed considering the damage and injuries others sustained." World Champion Randy Scism, who designed and built the Nemschoff Sports raceboat, TOMMY BAHAMA, substituted for throttleman Mark Nemschoff who was out with an injury. The boat ran well and handled the rough water but sustained fuel delivery problems and was down on power most of the race.
This first time event was a partnership between the Daytona Speedway, home of Nascar, and APBA-Offshore, the sanctioning organization of 'the next great motorsport'. The Speedway hosted thousands for a boat show and rock concert, and was the weekend home of the Tommy Bahama Offshore Compound where guests were treated to delicious selections from the Tommy Bahama menu as they viewed the raceboat and visited with the Team.
This, the first of ten events, will be broadcast on Speedvision Wednesday May 9 at 10pm eastern/ 9pm central time. The next event will be in Fort Myers, FL, May 18 - 20. More details are available on the Offshore website: www.apba-offshore.com .
Mark Nemschoff will make a presentation on Offshore Power Boat Racing with the Tommy Bahama Team at the Sheboygan Yacht Club on Wednesday, April 25, at 7 PM. The public is invited.
